Starting Off: Mascara

Heyyy beauties!  Can't believe it's already week number 6 of #theSOproject!  Crazy stuff.  Taking the spotlight this week is Mascara.  What girl cannot live without mascara? It instantly transforms the whole face.  If I had to choose only ONE make up item to take on holiday with me it would definitely be mascara. Love love loveee.  So here we go... as ever, I will do a brief explanation of what it is and how to use it, and also let you into my current and all time favourites!!

What is Mascara?
Mascara is a product that aims to lengthen and thicken the eyelashes.  Most mascaras out there come in tubes with a wand applicator.  It can define the eyes and really make them stand out.  Mascara can come in normal or waterproof (with waterproof obviously being a little harsher on the eyelashes as it is a lot tougher to remove - but lasts a lot longer).  The most common colours are black and brown (as they are the natural colours of eyelashes) however you can get other colours such as blue and green.

How to apply
Tip: Always apply mascara AFTER you've done the rest of your eye makeup (eyeshadow, eyeliner etc)
Remove the wand from the tube and wipe any excess formula from the end of the wand onto the inside of the tube.  Start at the root of your top eyelashes and gently sweep it towards the tip of your lashes.  (I prefer to add a little zig zag to my technique as I'm sweeping, but that's up to you).  To add a bit of definition to your bottom lashes, you can hold the wand vertical and gently add a little colour.  Once you're happy with your lashes, you can take a cotton bud (Q tip) with makeup remover to gently remove any tiny flecks or smudges around your eyes.

My Favourites
I've actually been lucky enough to be gifted with quite long, dark eyelashes (really not bragging there by the way, lol just saying), so I'm not too fussy when it comes to choosing a mascara to add length and volume, unless it's really really gloopy and just straightens out the lashes. However, over the years I've had my fair share of mascaras and there are a couple of beauties that I've loved that much that I have gone back for another go. Annoyingly though, I always used to just buy whichever was on offer in Boots or Superdrug at the time, and ended up forgetting which ones were the really good ones.  I haven't got any current personal pictures of my old reliable favourites as I'm forcing myself to use others that I have before I go and buy anymore as they will only end up drying out.  So the mascaras that I always know I can rely on are;

  • L'oreal Paris Double Extension Mascara - £11.29 in Boots (this has a white end, which you apply first to condition and lengthen the lashes, then the black end which is the actual mascara) loveee <3
  • Maybelline Great Lash Mascara - £4.99 in Boots
There are a couple of mascaras out there that are raved about in the blogging world so they are next on my list when I finally use up the ones I already own;
  • Benefit They're Real Mascara - £19.50
  • Lancome Hypnose Doll Eyes Mascara - £21.00

And that's it.  Once again I hope you all enjoyed my post and I really look forward to reading all of the other wonderful blogger's posts.
Has anyone got any other recommendations of a cult mascara?
